Between Intelligence and Exile: Chief Detective Max Weiss’ Role in the Danish Exile Community in Sweden during World War II
This article examines Chief Detective Max Weiss’ role in the Danish exile community in Sweden during World War II, focusing on how he leveraged his networks and knowledge to achieve a central position of power. Drawing on archival sources, including police reports, letters, and intelligence documents, the analysis highlights Weiss’ collaboration with Danish and Swedish actors and his work with the Refugee Office. The article demonstrates how Weiss navigated the intersection of Danish and Swedish interests, becoming a key figure in the organization of the exile community while also generating internal conflicts. It further situates Weiss’ actions within broader discussions of sovereignty, cross-border governance, and state functions during states of exception.
