Resumé

This article examines how students can engage in sustainability-oriented literature learning within the first language subjects of Nordic teacher education programs. Drawing on a cross-Nordic teaching project focused on sustainability and poetry, the article identifies both challenges and opportunities for ecocritical dialogue in conversations among student teachers. The empirical background for the article is recordings of computer-mediated discussions between Danish and Norwegian student teachers collaborating on the analysis and production of poetry. Using theories of sustainability and dialogic teaching, the analysis explores how students engage in dialogue with each other and with the poem they are working on. Based on this, we discuss the role of the teaching context in shaping whether and how space for ecocritical dialogue emerges in these conversations. Key findings indicate that a creative, multimodal, and cross-Nordic approach can inspire a text-oriented and experimental engagement with poetry and sustainability. However, the study also shows that deep engagement in ecocritical dialogue remains challenging, constrained by both the complexity of the communication situation and the students’ prior experiences with poetry and literature teaching.
