Abstract

The article examines how art, culture and play can be integrated into nursing and thereby expand the understanding of care, learning and relationships. Through an interview with nursing student Louise Guldsten Christensen, the article shows how music, drama, aesthetics and a culture of play can strengthen presence, courage, reflection and human connection in both education and clinical practice. Louise emphasizes that culture is not separate from health care, but is part of the values and micro actions that shape interpersonal encounters in nursing. The article presents six concrete suggestions for integrating culture into nursing education, including philosophy, drama pedagogy, bodily awareness, small everyday practices and attention to aesthetics as part of the ethics of care. These perspectives are connected to theories by Watson, Eriksson and Martinsen, all of whom highlight the importance of sensitivity, humanity and creativity in nursing. The article concludes that art and culture can create space for hope, identity, calm and learning and thereby strengthen the relational foundation on which nursing is built. Creativity is not described as an addition to professional competence, but as an expansion of it that can help make people whole.
