Self-presentation concerns (SPC) refer to individuals’ fear of being negatively evaluated by others, particularly by peers or valued audiences. In sport and exercise contexts, SPC are especially significant, as they help understand key psychological phenomena such as performance anxiety, choking under pressure and exercise participation. Despite their importance, research in this area faces persistent challenges that limit theoretical and practical advancements. This conceptual paper provides a critical synthesis of research on SPC in sport and exercise, addressing three key areas that emerged from an exploratory analysis: 1) the ways in which SPC
are defined and conceptualized, including a new definition; 2) a review of commonly used measurement tools; and 3) an assessment of these tools, identifying methodological gaps and providing recommendations for future assessment development. Through a new definition and the development of a knowledge map, this paper provides a structured framework that clarifies the conceptual landscape of SPC in sport and exercise. This foundation highlights both consensus and divergence in the literature, supporting future research and practical application.
