The article discusses Hans Jørgen Lundager Jensen's analysis of the function of olfaction in the Hebrew Bible. Whereas Hans Jørgen sees a sharp distinction between fragrance in the cultic/divine sphere and in the erotic sphere, such as in the Song of Songs and in the Book of Esther, this article argues for a more complex scenario, in which the spheres of the cult/the divine, royalty/power and attraction/the erotic overlap in order to paint a picture of Yahweh as a powerful, masculine and fragrant deity.
