Denne artikel skitserer en historisk materialistisk tilgang til politisk teori og idéhistorie baseret på Karl Marx’ arbejde med udgangspunkt i de nyeste udviklinger indenfor feltet. Artiklen begynder med en gennemgang af Marx’ kritik af Hegels Retsfilosofi og hans udvikling af en historisk materialistisk forståelse af staten, samfundet og sidenhen politisk økonomi på dette grundlag. Dernæst diskuteres idéernes relevans i en historisk materialistisk optik med fokus på deres rolle i, og som en del af, de historisk betingede samfundsmæssige forhold og institutioner. Til sidst præsenteres en historisk materialistisk tilgang, der kombinerer tekstuel analyse, kontekstuel forståelse og politisk selvrefleksivitet. Denne tilgang er ikke neutral, men politisk engageret og refleksiv omkring det. Den forsøger aktivt at forstå og udfordre de sociale og materielle forhold, der former vores idéer og samfund.
