The analysis of this issue is based on data from a survey in 2022 of all types of associations in four rural municipalities. The analysis, which is inspired by theories of new institutionalism, shows that most associations are involved in tasks that aim to preserve or develop local conditions and institutions, and that the associations have a positive attitude towards contributing to develop the local community. The associations’ involvement in the local community depends in particular on the number of inhabitants in the local community, what their primary goals are and their size, while the associations’ age, municipal context and public support have little significance.

2024-09-02T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Politica https://tidsskrift.dk/politica/article/view/148504 Vertical interaction between village councils, citizen associations, and the municipality: the associations’ perspective 2024-08-22T13:50:28+02:00 Kasper Friis Bavnbæk kaf@sdu.dk Annette Aagaard Thuesen aat@sam.sdu.dk
Based on deliberative democracy theory, this article examines differences between village councils and citizen associations in terms of their interests and interaction with the municipality. Survey data shows that they are engaged with many issues that municipalities are responsible for, and that distance to the municipality’s town hall affects their engagement. Survey data also shows that local councils occupy a position closer to the municipality than citizen associations. The two types of associations are satisfied with their interaction with the municipality but based on different parameters. Regular meetings where the associations have access to direct conversations with politicians and administration and the opportunity to access municipal funds are some of the things that mean most for perceptions of positive interaction.
2024-09-02T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Politica https://tidsskrift.dk/politica/article/view/148505 Democracy through association councils? Associations’ involvement in local councils in culture and recreation 2024-08-22T13:54:29+02:00 Malene Thøgersen malene.thogersen@vifo.dk Frederik Petersen frederik.petersen@idan.dk
It is widely assumed that associations can play a democratic role as a link between citizens and the political system, but associations do not always fulfill this role on their own. There are several local association councils, especially in culture and recreation, i.e., umbrella organizations for associations in the respective areas, and they can play a mediating role between associations and municipalities. However, to realize this potential, associations must engage in the councils, but this is not always the case. Based on a survey among cultural and leisure associations in four Danish municipalities, this article examines variation in the associations’ engagement in local association councils. Results show that more human resources in the associations and a higher degree of local orientation positively affect engagement, and that sports associations are more likely to engage than other types of associations.
2024-09-02T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Politica https://tidsskrift.dk/politica/article/view/148506 Stability and change in voluntary and paid work in sports associations over two decades 2024-08-22T13:56:35+02:00 Karsten Elmose-Østerlund kosterlund@health.sdu.dk
Four surveys of sports associations form the basis for analyses of 1) the development in voluntary and paid work in the associations over two decades, and 2) the relationship between key characteristics of the associations and voluntary and paid work. Overall, the development in voluntary and paid work in the associations has remained stable in the period. The most significant change is an aging of coaches and leaders over time. Large associations perform better than small ones when it comes to voluntary work and are more likely to hire paid employees. Conversely, old associations and associations in small local areas are less successful when it comes to voluntary work.
2024-09-02T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Politica https://tidsskrift.dk/politica/article/view/148508 Foreningers involvering i at bevare og udvikle lokalsamfund i landdistrikter 2024-08-22T14:04:07+02:00 Bjarne Ibsen bibsen@health.sdu.dk Evald Bundgård Iversen eiversen@health.sdu.dk
2024-09-02T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Politica
