Normativ politisk teori beskæftiger sig analytisk med, hvordan samfundet bør være, og hvordan mennesker bør agere. Dette adskiller sig fra de dele af samfundsvidenskaben, der stræber mod at forstå eller forklare samfundet eller menneskers handlinger. Artiklen beskriver den normative politiske teoris metode. Hovedelementerne i denne er begrebsanalyse, reflekteret ligevægt og anvendelsen af hypotetiske eksempler. Disse udlægges og illustreres i det følgende. Afslutningsvis gives der nogle råd til, hvordan denne metode i praksis kan bringes i anvendelse.
