Call:
New parties, new issues and a pandemic have been the order of the day in recent national elections in Norway (2021), Sweden (2022) and Denmark (2022). Across the three countries, some issues like climate, crime, energy and immigration policies have played significant roles in the recent elections, and the interaction between legacy news media and social media, as well as the interaction between the media agenda, the public agenda and the political agenda have been heavily debated. Against this background, we invite scholars to send in articles that focus on the role of journalistic news media in recent national, regional and local elections as well as elections to the representative bodies of indigenous peoples and self-governed territories. Topics addressed may include, but are not restricted to the following:
- Agenda spill-over between the media, public and political agenda
- Personalization and horse-race coverage
- Campaign coverage in digital native and alternative news media
- Interaction between legacy media and social media platforms
- News media coverage of fringe and radical parties
- News media coverage of politicians’ social media activities
- The role of televised debates
- The role of voting advice applications (“kandidattest”)
- Issues and issue ownership
We welcome both single-country and cross-country studies. Studies focusing on election coverage from a historical and longitudinal perspective are also very welcome. We invite contributions in Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and English. We initially select articles for the special issue based on submitted abstracts. Please submit an abstract of 400-500 words outlining the article you would like to contribute, including its problem/focus, main contribution as well as theory, method and possibly case to Mark Blach-Ørsten (oersten@ruc.dk).
The deadline for abstracts is March 1, 2023. If your article is accepted for the special issue, the deadline for submitting a manuscript ready for peer review is June 1, 2023. We intend for the special issue to be published in early 2024.
