Neutrondoteret silicium – co-innovation hos en dansk halvlederproducent

Resumé

Halvlederindustri – i Danmark? Måske vil det komme bag på mange, at Danmark siden slutningen af 1950’erne har haft en halvlederindustri. Det handler om Frederikssund-virksomheden Topsil, der i 1974 som den første halvlederproducent i verden bragte neutrondoteret silicium på verdensmarkedet. Innovationen foregik i samspil med et par af de store aktører i branchen og frem for alt i et tæt samarbejde med Forskningscenter Risø. Der var tale om et nyt højteknologisk produkt, som blev lanceret på baggrund af et offentlig-privat udviklingssamarbejde; et eksempel på co-innovation i dansk industri. I de efterfølgende år var Topsil og Risø, hver på deres måde, med til at sætte dagsordenen for den videre udvikling af dette specielle materiales produktion og anvendelse, hvilket i mange år gjorde de to aktører til centrale spillere i en nichepræget global industri. Historien om neutrondoteret silicium kaster samtidig lys over en række spørgsmål, der knytter sig til flere af de dominerende forestillinger om og modeller for innovation.

Neutron Transmutation Doped Silicon: Co-innovation in a Danish Semiconductor Company  

It might surprise many to learn that Denmark since the late 1950s has been home to a minor semiconductor industry. This article deals with the semiconductor manufacturer Topsil which in 1974 was the first company to introduce neutron transmutation doped silicon (NTD-silicon) into the global market. The innovation process took place in collaboration with leading global actors in the electrical industry and above all in close collaboration with Risø National Laboratory. We are thus dealing with an innovative high-tech product launched on the basis of a public-private partnership, an early example of co-innovation in Danish industry. In subsequent years both Topsil and Risø became agenda-setting actors in the global NTD-silicon industry. Interesting in itself, the innovation history of NTD-silicon also sheds light on a number of issues related to some of the dominant perceptions and models of innovation.
