Abstract

In the present work, we aim at discussing the construction of subjectivity in relation to gender categories, especially in regards to male identity, in Caio Fernando Abreu’s first novel White Limit (Original title: Limite branco, 1970). We believe that the protagonist’s process of aging, alongside with his subject’s formation, in the narrative, takes us to face a fluidity, which puts at stake the notions of what is taken for granted as appropriate for the  individual.  Studies on the displacement of the contemporary subject, Gender Studies, and on men's studies in particular, will serve as the theoretical apparatus for the discussions raised here.

Juan Filipe Stacul é graduado em Letras pela Faculdade Castelo Branco (2009), mestre em Letras - Estudos Literários pela Universidade Federal de Viçosa (2012) e doutorando em Letras - Literaturas de Língua Portuguesa pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais (PUC Minas). Atuou como professor substituto na Universidade Federal de Viçosa (2012-2014), na área de Língua Portuguesa e Estilística do Português. Atualmente, é bolsista CAPES e editor-chefe do periódico 'Jangada: crítica, literatura e artes', assim como membro da Society for Comparative Literature and the Arts (SCLA), membro da Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA) e coordenador do Grupo de Estudos em Teoria e Estética Queer da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Interessa-se, sobretudo, pelos estudos relacionados à crítica feminista e teoria queer. Em suas últimas pesquisas, no campo da literatura, deteve-se a estudar o escritor contemporâneo Caio Fernando Abreu, assim como o poeta capixaba Miguel Marvilla, observando a forma como estes autores lidam com questões de subjetividade, gênero e alteridade. Investiga, ainda, as relações entre poder e discurso, o ensino de gêneros acadêmicos e a escrita criativa na universidade.
