Abstract

Biological membranes consist of bilayers of lipid molecules in an aqueous environment and are examples of so-called soft materials. Such soft layers exhibit strong fluctuations, both within the bilayer itself and in the form of three-dimensional undulations of the layer. The fluctuations determine the physiological properties of the membranes, such as permeability, and how they exert forces on other membranes and surfaces. The article describes how these fluctuations can be calculated and determined through experimental measurements.
