Abstract
This article provides a detailed review of the long and complex development history of the Gaia mission. Høg describes both the technical challenges and the institutional processes behind the mission. For physicists, it’s especially interesting to see how precision astrometry requires extreme instrumental control. The article also gives insight into the collaboration between scientists, engineers, and space organizations. It illustrates how large scientific projects are realized in practice. A strong and technically relevant article.
