Abstract
Observations of distant supernovae and galaxies have shown that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. This surprising discovery points to the existence of dark energy—an as-yet unknown component that dominates the universe’s energy budget. The article explains the cosmological evidence for dark energy and describes how its presence affects the long-term evolution of the universe. It discusses different scenarios for the universe’s future, depending on the properties and dynamics of dark energy. For physicists, the question of dark energy is one of the most fundamental problems in modern cosmology because it touches on gravitation, quantum field theory, and the fate of the universe. The article offers a thought-provoking introduction to how the universe may gradually become darker and emptier as cosmic expansion continues.
