Abstract

The Hipparcos mission marks a breakthrough in astrometric precision with positions and parallaxes for 120,000 stars. Erik Høg describes the technology behind the mission and introduces its successor, Roemer – a proposal to ESA for a CCD-based satellite with 100,000 times greater efficiency. Through a detailed analysis of measurement principles and system architecture, the article shows how imaging CCDs in drift-scan mode revolutionize measurement accuracy and open the possibility for parallaxes across the entire Milky Way. Roemer+ takes it a step further with interferometric angle measurement. An exciting journey into precision optics and data integration, putting Danish astrometry at the heart of European space research.
