Resumé

Artiklen analyserer aspekter af den nyere brug af modernitetsbegrebet inden for sociologi, antropologi og historie med henblik på en diskussion af dets potentialer i historiefaglige analyser. Artiklens omdrejningspunktet er kritikken af modernitetsbegrebet som en eurocentrisk, analytisk kategori og de deraf følgende forsøg på at overkomme denne begrænsning gennem en pluralisering af modernitetskategorien. Artiklen analyserer her konsekvenserne af Frederick Coopers indflydelsesrige forslag om at tilgå modernitet som aktørkategori. Gennem en læsning af en række værker, der har forholdt sig til eller er under indflydelse af denne analysestrategi, konkluderes, at aktørtilgangen er et frugtbart udgangspunkt for historiefaglige analyser under forudsætning af, at empirisk funderede diskursive analyser samtidigt inddrager sociale og politiske kontekster. Denne tilgang muliggør en kobling mellem studier af modernitetsforestillinger og moderniseringsbestræbelser.
