Resumé

Denne artikel sætter fokus på den statsopfattelse, der præger James C. Scotts indflydelsesrige forfatterskab. Mens staten optræder som et dominerende begreb i Scotts arbejde, forbliver den (staten) næsten helt ubehandlet i analytisk forstand. Med udgangspunkt i denne observation indkredser forfatterne først Scotts statsforståelse gennem en præsentation af analyserne i de tre bøger Seeing Like a State, The Moral Economy of the Peasant og The Art of Not Being Governed. Derefter kontekstualiserer og problematiserer de Scotts statsopfattelse i forhold til nyere teoretiske aspekter i diskussionen om staten som fænomen. Mens Scotts stats- og magtopfattelse tilbyder en god kritik af magthavere og centralistisk funderede forandringsprojekter, argumenterer forfatterne for, at de tilknyttede analytiske redskaber er mindre gode til at vise, hvordan magt fungerer. I sidste ende er artiklens argument således, at Scotts blik på staten skaber en simplificeret opfattelse af moderniseringsprojekter, som afskærer os fra at forstå vigtige aspekter af disse fænomeners komplekse natur.
