Erik 1.s rejser
Kongeligt rejsediplomati omkring år 1100
Resumé
The Travels of King Eric I. Royal Traveling Diplomacy around 1100 In 1098, king Eric I of Denmark left for Italy, where he visited Venice and venerated the relics of St. Nicholas in Bari. On his way back, he met the Pope, with whom he probably discussed the canonization of his brother Canute as well as the creation of a Danish ecclesiastical province. After Eric’s return to Denmark, the Danish authorities officially applied for Cannute’s canonization, which was granted in the last week of April 1099. In 1102, the king and his company, including his queen, left Denmark to travel through Russia to Constantinople, where he met the Byzantine emperor Alexios I. The two princes appear to have made an alliance, as Alexios gave Eric a number of warriors. As Eric was bound for Jerusalem, the emperor’s intention may have been to help Eric reestablish Byzantine domination of the Syrian coast. However, the king died on Cyprus, where he was buried.
