Mandag den 31. oktober holdt lektor, dr. phil. Tønnes Bekker-Nielsen sin afskedsforelæsning på Institut for Historie på SDU. Tønnes er antikhistoriker med særlig interesse for Romerriget, men han er meget mere end det. Hans vingefang er større end de flestes. Det har studerende, kolleger og læsere af hans omfattende forfatterskab nydt godt af i mange år. Samme kunne tilhørerne til afskedsforelæsningen, som vi her bringer. Dette er en let redigeret udgave af forelæsningen. Omtalte værker og anden form for benyttet litteratur er anført i litteraturlisten.
