Hvad er tid for historikere? Da det moderne historiefag blev skabt, var det ikke en central problemstilling i fagets teori. Det er det imidlertid blevet siden midten af 1900-tallet, hvor ’historisk tid’ i stigende grad er blevet tematiseret inden for historieteorien. Denne artikel giver en indføring i nogle centrale bidrag. Artiklen gør nedslag i Annales-skolens opgør med begivenhedshistoriens tidsforståelse, i tematiseringen af tidsbevidsthed og tidslag i Reinhart Kosellecks historieteori, i det radikale tidsbegreb hos Michel Foucault, i koblinger til rummets historisering i bl.a. globalhistorie og postkolonial teori og i aktuelle tematiseringer af tidsbegrebet i lyset af diskussionen om den antropocæne tidsalder. Artiklen viser herigennem, at den såkaldt temporale vending i historiefaget er et heterogent fænomen. Historieteorien byder ikke på én tidsteori, men på et antal teorier, der er udviklet på meget forskellige fundamenter og er præget af meget forskellige kontekster. Det mest gennemgående fænomen er, at forståelsen af tiden som en endimensional linje er blevet forladt til fordel for en typisk geologisk metaforik, hvor tiden byder på forskellige lag.
