Resumé

Danmark-Norge var i flere århundreder tæt knyttet til Nederlandene både kulturelt, økonomisk, politisk og teknologisk. I begyndelsen af 1500-tallet regerede Kong Hans og siden Christian II over en række riger og lande som i stærkt stigende omfang orienterede sig mod Nederlandene. I første omgang mod et af Det habsburgske Imperiums mest velstående og fremgangsrige, moderne områder, siden Den hollandske Republik. Forholdet mellem Danmark-Norge og Nederlandene blev præget af, at det var hollænderne, der svingede taktstokken som Nordeuropas politiske og økonomiske stormagt i de første to tredjedele af 1600-tallet. Herfra kom ny maritim teknologi, ny lovgivning, ny kunst, nye måder at låne penge på, nye måder at fiske på, og overlegne måder at slås og handle til søs på. Danmark-Norge sendte råvarer til Nederlandene i form af tømmer, klipfisk, kvæg og korn, samt billig arbejdskraft.

Tiden fra ca. år 1500, hvor verden blev større både samfundsøkonomisk, geografisk og som rum for forestillingsverdener, hvor de nye magtstater vandt frem, var også den fase, hvor Nederlandene var et af Europas mest indflydelsesrige centre med talrige kontaktflader og sammenhænge med Danmark-Norge. Nederlandene har derfor haft stor tiltrækning for moderne historieskrivning som både teoretisk og empirisk genstandsfelt.
