Abstract

The internal paradoxes and contradictions in Marx’ work have always been a major obstacle to his interpreters. As Althusser attempted to formulate a coherent Marxist theory, he characterized these inconsistencies as ideological elements caused by the concrete political functions of the different texts. These ideological elements were to be eradicated from the theory. This article sketches a different approach. It suggests that it may just be this political functionality, not a coherent theory, that characterizes Marx’ work. The internal inconsistencies of Marxist theory therefore have to be understood as the theoretical expression of a consistent political struggle in constantly changing circumstances. Finally, it is suggested how this approach has consequences not just for understanding Marx and Marxist theory, but also for understanding current political challenges.
