Resumé

Når en person skærer i, brænder eller slår sig selv, synes vi intuitivt at reagere med bekymring og en holdning om, at dette er en adfærd, som vi bør gribe ind over for. Men er det egentlig det? Selvskade kan for mange ses som den mindst smertefulde og mest hensigtsmæssige mestringsstrategi til at håndtere deres egen situation, og det kan derfor være velfærdsnedsættende at forhindre disse personer i at skade sig selv. Derfor bør vi revidere vores intuitive reaktion overfor fænomenet, da skaden isoleret set ikke synes at retfærdiggøre denne intuition. Der synes potentielt at være noget iboende forkert i at skade sig selv, men alt taget i betragtning er dette ikke nok til at begrunde et indgreb i adfærden. Det er dog vigtigt at understrege, at vi ikke skal negligere, at personer, der skader sig selv, kan have brug for hjælp. Hjælpen bør dog ikke bestå i at bekæmpe selve den selvskadende adfærd men i at fokusere på det underliggende problem.
