Author Guide

Leviathan: Interdisciplinary Journal in English publishes original academic articles by students at the Department of English at Aarhus University. Submissions are selected by faculty from among outstanding exam papers in all courses offered at the English department. All submissions will be assessed in terms of academic merit, with special focus on argumentative cogency and scholarly creativity. Below is a checklist that we ask all authors to complete prior to submitting an article for publication in Leviathan.

Contributions to Leviathan should:

- be submitted as a Word file (.doc or .docx).

- be formatted per the style guide of the Department of English at Aarhus University: http://e-pages.dk/aarhusuniversitet/1025/. (The style guide stipulates the use of either MLA or Chicago depending on subject matter. Simply retain whichever style was originally used for the exam paper. Retain also the use of American English or British English spelling and punctuation.)

- be proofread. The editors at Leviathan are not responsible for any errors that appear in the published article.

- not exceed the character limit of the original exam paper.

- include in the submission email a short abstract (no more than 150 words) describing the main argument of the article. The abstract should be in English.

- include 3-10 keywords that identify the area and focus of the article. The first letter(s) in proper names should be capitalized. Write all other entries in lower case. Include the title of the course to which the article was originally submitted as an exam paper as the final keyword. Keywords should be separated by semicolons, not commas.

- include the names and email addresses of the authoring student and the referring examiner.

- include the title of the course to which the article was originally submitted as an exam paper.

In addition to these general points, we ask that submissions conform to the following word template:

- All text should use the Times New Roman font.

- Apart from headings, all text should be 12-point. Headings should be 18-point, subheadings 14-point.

- Do not include an extra line or space between paragraphs.

- Line spacing should be set to 1.5.

- The first line of every new paragraph should be indented 1 cm. Do not indent the first line of a new section (following a heading or subheading).

- Block quotations should be indented evenly—that is, the entire quotation is indented to the 2 cm mark using the ruler, rather than only the first line. There should be an extra space before and after the block quotation.

- References should feature hanging indents of .5 cm.

- If a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) can be identified for any citation, please provide the DOI and not the URL. This is critical. If citations in an article do not feature DOI identification, the article itself cannot be assigned a DOI of its own. Refer to the article template for examples of how to include a DOI with a citation.

- All illustrations should be centered on the page. Include an extra space before and after the illustration. If the illustration includes a caption, insert the extra space below the caption. Authors must ensure that they have the right to reproduce any copyrighted materials.

To see an example of a text formatted per the above guidelines, please refer to the article template, which you should have received along with this author guide. The article template features additional minor formatting guidelines not specified by this document.

Once you have completed these steps, send the revised exam paper to jkc@cc.au.dk for editorial review. If your paper agrees with the author guide, a short processing period will commence that will end with the publication of your paper. If your paper does not agree with the author guide, the editorial team may return the paper to you with instructions about how to bring the paper into agreement with the requirements.

Sincerely,

The editorial team at Leviathan: Interdisciplinary Journal in English

Jens Kjeldgaard-Christiansen and Mathias Clasen
