We already know (see “Grundtvig-Studier”, 1950, P. 100—102) that Grundtvig during his students days, 1800—1803, twice appeared as an amateur actor, and appeared on one of these occasions, into the bargain, in a piece written by himself. Now it turns out that soon after taking the examination for his degree in theology (in October, 1803) Grundtvig also appeared on yet another occasion as an actor, in the private theatrical society, “Borups Selskab”. It is the historian Fr. Barfod who gives this information in an out-of-the-way passage in one of his writings dating from 1842. An investigation of the records of this theatrical society which have been preserved has, however, failed to confirm Barfods statement, which, nevertheless, is undoubtedly reliable. The date can be established as Dec. 7th-, 1803, and the play, as Barfod quite correctly states, was “Gulddaasen” ( “The Golden Box”) by Chr. Olufsen.
