Svenskevældet i Hedeby

The article takes up the controversial topic of Swedish rule in Hedeby (Haithabu) in a period around 900 CE, which has been discussed for over 100 years. Particular emphasis is placed on the following aspects: 1) How the myth of Swedish rule arose and on what basis. 2) How the myth can live on despite thorough refutations of all the arguments put forward to support it. 3) Critical assessment of Adam of Bremen’s use of his sources in the chronicle, the uncertainty of much of his information and especially his report of what he says king Sweyn Estridsen told him. Many previous treatments of the subject refer to the latter as »what the king has said«. We do not know what the king has said, we only know what Adam says that the king has said. 4) The use of statistical considerations in the humanities, exemplified by personal names in runic inscriptions. Numerical information must be put into context, and small numbers are not suitable for calculations of statistical relations. 5) Attempts have been made to find confirmation of Adam’s testimony in a number of historical-philological di sciplines: The Haddeby 2 runic stone is claimed to be Swedish, the dialects in some southern parts of Denmark seem to be influenced by the Swedish language, a group of Danish place names in -by in the Schleswig region show a characteristic compositional feature in common with the corresponding Swedish ones, and Hedeby has tombs of a chamber type similar to some tombs in Uppland (Sweden). All of this allegedly corroborates Adam’s description that Olaf, who ruled Denmark around 900 CE, was Swedish. These different branches of the humanities support each other and might seem to confirm that there were Swedish rulers in Schleswig around the year 900 CE. My conclusion is that the evidence adduced does not deliver any decisive argument in favour of the idea of Swedish rulers in Hedeby, and even less of a Swedish invasion. Nevertheless people keep talking about this Swedish kingdom in South Jutland repeating the above arguments, which have no evidentiary value.
