In this short paper, I investigate the historical sources and explain why there has been doubt in the literature about the name of the father of the Danish Neo-Latin author Bertel Knudsen Aquilonius (1588-1650).

Lisbeth Imer and Anders Leegaard Christensen analysed the second line of the Sønder Asmindrup plaster inscription 2 as part of a certificate of debt, and – convincingly so – as a dating in Latin (language). Line 1 in Middle Danish was interpreted by Lis Jacobsen shortly after the discovery of the inscription in 1909. I scrutinise this part of the text and the currently accepted reading. First, the second word of line 1 must read to=ki toki, the preterite subjunctive of taka/take ‘take’. Secondly, I present and discuss two transcriptions and readings of the four first characters of line 2, the focus being on the possible reading as an abbreviation for the verbal form korsede or korsade ‘set a cross’. I find my suggestions in full harmony and coherence with Imer’s and Christensen’s proposal to read the rest of line 2 as a dating in Latin of a contract.

The editions of Leonora Christina’s French autobiography (2021) and Otto Sperling’s biography of Leonora Christina (2022) have provided prerequisites for a thorough study of the two works and of their mutual relationship, including the question of the autobiography’s addressee. At least since 1730, Otto Sperling has been designated as the addressee, which Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen has argued against in two articles from 2022. Instead, he has put forward the hypothesis that the autobiography is addressed to Admiral Henrik Bielke. This hypothesis has motivated the present study. The procedure has been to collate the two texts and bring out all agreements and deviations (section 2). Next, the autobiography has been read closely to collect all information about the addressee (section 3), and the other sources for the addressee question have been scrutinized (section 4). Finally, the importance of the addressee question for the perception of the autobiography is assessed: Is it indeed a private letter or a defense addressed to an international audience? (section 5). The main results of the investigation are that the autobiography is not conform to the characteristics of a private letter, and that Otto Sperling was probably the “Monsieur” to whom the autobiography is directly addressed, but that the true addressee was the European network of the Ulfeldt family and other influential circles.

The reply discusses three points in relation to Marita Akhøj Nielsen and Lene Schøsler’s restatement (above pp. 27-61) of their position on the genesis and addressee of Leonora Christina’s French autobiography. First it points out that Akhøj Nielsen and Schøsler have not adequately explananed the puzzling differences between Leonora Christina’s French autobiography and Sperling’s Latin life of her. These are better accounted for by the author’s hypotheses that Sperling’s Latin life is the fruit of a series of interviews around 1690 and that the differences are not the result of sloppy editing on the part of Sperling but of slips of memory on the part of Leonora Christina. Second it advances new evidence that the French autobiography did not enter Professor Reitzer’s library as one of several Sperling manuscripts. Third it categorizes the French autobiography as prison literature rather than a vindication and hence argues against the hypothesis that Sperling distributed it among friends of the Ulfeldt couple abroad.

Prompted by a recent debate about what constitutes the phoneme inventory of standard Danish and how to establish it, I aim to demonstrate that within a traditional structuralist framework, contrast (commutation) and distribution (complementarity) are both ineluctable parameters in the phonological analysis. I do not advocate any one specific result of the analysis, but present the criteria for progressing from surface contrasts to phoneme inventories at different levels of abstraction and the considerations that inform the choices along the way.

This short article is written in response to the proposals presented in the paper by Schachtenhaufen in the previous volume of Danske Studier. It is argued that in general, and contrary to Schachtenhaufen’s claims, the adaptations to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) made in most descriptions of Danish phonetics and phonology are not in conflict with the principles put forward in the IPA Handbook. Furthermore, it is pointed out that most of Schachtenhaufen’s proposals for a revised transcription standard for Danish appear to be without sufficient empirical foundation.

Nouns, whose fixed gender is commune in Danish, are combined with neuter in predicative sentences like politik er hård-t (politics is tough). I show the grammatical facts and explore two attempts of explanation. According to Louis Hjelmslev, gender is endowed with a basic significance, namely consistency, split into concentration and expansion. Aage Hansen’s theory claims that the word noget (Lat. aliquid) and the pronoun det (Eng. it) possess the power as to generate the gender system, which associates neuter with infinitude and commune with finitude. Developing the Hjelmslevian thesis that gender and aspect are interrelated, I interpret genus neutrum in politik er hårdt on the basis of the triple -t in Danish: as the token of adjectives in neuter, of certain adverbs, and of the part participle.

This paper has a dual aim: In the first part of the article I wish to examine and evaluate the reception of the works of the Danish Baroque poet and journalist Anders Bording, showing how his reputation as one of the greatest poets in the Danish Language with time has declined to a position of underestimation, especially due to the aesthetic taste of the Romantic Period. Based on this review I wish to show how earlier literary historians have fallen through, hence I argue for a revision of his works and an altogether new occupation embedded in a historically more correct interpration of the Baroque Period in comparison to past research.
