Abstract
I en epoke hvor Standardmodellen er eksperimentelt bekræftet, men ikke komplet, markerer LHC næste skridt mod dybere forståelse. Hansen beskriver den fysiske motivation for LHC: top-kvarkens masse, Higgs-partiklens eksistens og mulige supersymmetriske partnere. Han gennemgår den tekniske vision for LHC: 27 km tunnel, 8 TeV per proton og detektorudfordringer i skala og strålingshårdhed. Artiklen balancerer grundlæggende partikelfysik med acceleratorfysik og giver en overbevisende argumentation for, hvorfor netop denne maskine kan åbne nye vinduer mod “new physics”.
