Abstract

Artiklen introducerer cellemembranen som et fysisk system, hvor kontinuummekanik og statistisk fysik mødes. Membraners bøjelighed, spænding og faseovergange analyseres med begreber som fri energi og krumningselasticitet. Læseren føres fra lipid-dobbeltlagets molekylære opbygning til makroskopiske former og instabiliteter. Særligt interessant er koblingen mellem termiske fluktuationer og funktionel stabilitet – et eksempel på hvordan entropi og struktur spiller sammen i biologiske systemer. For fysikere med interesse for blød stof-fysik er artiklen et klart bevis på, at biologien rummer veldefinerede og kvantificerbare fysiske problemer.
