Abstract

The article demonstrates how advanced physical measurement techniques can reveal entirely new layers of insight in art historical research. By combining multispectral imaging over an unusually broad wavelength range (400–1700 nm) with SEM-EDX and Raman spectroscopy, hidden geometric structures, pigment layers, and material choices in the paintings of Vilhelm Lundstrøm are uncovered.

For physicists, it is particularly interesting to see how spectral data cubes and filter-based imaging are used as analytical tools, and how sensor physics both constrains and enables interpretation. The article convincingly demonstrates how non-destructive methods can be complemented by micro-destructive techniques to achieve both spatial and chemical resolution.

The result is a compelling example of the interdisciplinary application of physics, where optics, materials physics, and signal analysis play a central role in the study and preservation of cultural heritage.
