Abstract

This article takes the reader into one of the most enduring mysteries in the history of science: what did Tycho Brahe actually die of? Drawing on modern chemical analyses and historical sources, the final days in the life of the Danish astronomer are reconstructed. The article discusses hypotheses regarding mercury poisoning and evaluates them in the light of recent analytical methods. It paints a fascinating picture of how scientific techniques can be applied retrospectively to historical problems. At the same time, it becomes clear how the combination of chemistry, physics, and history can provide new answers to old questions. It is a narrative that appeals to the physicist, the chemist, and the historian alike – demonstrating how interdisciplinary research can uncover the truth behind myths.
