Abstract

This article introduces the physics of clusters of atoms and molecules and demonstrates their importance in both natural phenomena and technological applications. Using everyday examples such as fog, smoke, and snow, the article discusses nucleation and crystal growth in undercooled gases. The concept of growth spirals is presented together with the phenomenon of magic cluster sizes, where specific numbers of atoms lead to enhanced stability, illustrated by xenon and metal clusters. These systems exhibit physical laws that differ from those of isolated atoms and bulk crystalline solids. The article concludes by highlighting cluster physics as a unifying field linking atomic physics, nuclear physics, quantum chemistry, and condensed-matter physics, opening new perspectives for quantum physics.
