Resumé
Hvis du interesserer dig lidt for fysik, har du sikkert hørt, at naturen har givet os en fundamental hastighedsbegrænsning: lysets fart. Uanset hvor hårdt du prøver, vil du aldrig kunne rejse hurtigere end lyset. Du ved måske også, at universet udvider sig, og har måske endda hørt, at de fjerneste galakser fjerner sig fra os med hastigheder, der overstiger lysets. Men er disse udsagn ikke i modstrid med hinanden? Og selv hvis nogle galakser fjerner sig hurtigere end lyset, må det vel betyde, at vi ikke kan se dem? I modsætning til denne populære opfattelse er vi faktisk i stand til at se galakser, som fjerner sig fra os hurtigere end lysets fart.
