Abstract

Soldering using nitrate of silver - A previously undescribed prehistoric soldering method?

A gold berloque from the Roman Iron Age (figs. 1-2) found in southern Jutland was examined to decide the method of production. Analysis of the fragments were carried out using SEM (scanning electron microscopy) combined with a quality examination (EDX). Chemical soldering using copper nitrate in antiquity is described in literature. However, the analysis of this berloque indicates the use of chemical soldering using silver. Practical experiments suggest that soldering granulated gold using silver nitrate is possible.
