Abstract

Brandstrup III

Graves from the Late Roman Iron Age

A small cemetery on a hill top contained two Viking Age chamber graves (Iversen & Nielsen 1995), an undated grave, and two graves from the late Roman Iron Age (fig. 1). The last two were inhumations with remains of the bole coffin clearly visible (fig. 2). In grave E the narrow pit around the coffin has been planked up (fig. 5, 6, 7). This grave contained a brooch (fig. 8) and 3 vessels (fig. 9), but only few sherds were found in grave D (fig. 4). The pottery belongs to Ringtved's northern group, whereas the bole coffin is typical for the southern group (Ringtved 1988). Both the planking up of the grave pit and the pot with cylindrical neck are rather uncommon features, present in both groups.
