Abstract

A medieval seal matrix from Tvilum

A medieval seal matrix found in the churchyard of Tvilum (Gjern, Skanderborg) was presented at Moesgård and later surrendered to the National Museum as treasure trove. The matrix, which is cast in lead, consists of a circular disc (fig. 1)(diameter 2.6 cm, thickness 0.4 cm) with a now deformed handle on the back. (fig. 2). The seal face bears an owner's mark and the circumscription '+si+dnō+nicolaotoui'. The reading of the last four letters is uncertain. The matrix with this unusual inscription is dated on palaeographical evidence to the second half of the 15th century. It probably belonged to a monk at the monastery.
