Abstract

Textiles from Rådved

Three fragments of textiles were found in the hoard:

1) Small patch of tabby-woven linen (3 x 4,5 cm) to which the silver-eagle has been stitched. It is a fine material possibly deriving from a shirt.

2) Fragmented sack of thick tabby-woven linen, now about 6 x 23 cm. A piece of the string that originally tied the opening is left. In this sack or purse 889 coins were kept within the jug (fig. 2). It is a question whether this has ever been used as an ordinary purse or was made specially for the deposition.

3) A yellow-brown woollen twill fragment was for protection placed on top of the coins in the »Kugeltopf« (fig. 3). This sort of textile is well known from medieval clothes in the National Museum, i.e. from the Norsemen in Greenland and bodies found in Danish bogs. The fragment may derive from worn out clothing.
