Love and Titus’ Military Leadership in Josephus’ Jewish War

Abstract

This paper, inspired by the scholarship of Mogens Herman Hansen, identifies fatherly love as expressed by the Greek verb agapaō (ἀγαπάω) as a principle of transformational leadership that Titus developed and expressed in his evolution as the ultimately successful commander of Roman forces in the Jewish War as described by Josephus in his Bellum Judaicum. Twentieth-century CE instances of the employment of this theme in transformational military leadership in US and British forces are cited to support the enduring power of this principle in motivating troops facing grave dangers in war.
