The Power Dynamics of Greek Akropoleis in Classical Literary Sources

Abstract

Mogens Hansen’s research on the poleis of Greece means that it is fitting to contribute a study of Greek akropoleis to this volume in his honour. In this article I survey references to akropoleis in classical literary texts. I show that accounts of akropoleis are very much intertwined with the history of human conflict, political power struggle (and its resolution), and the rise and fall of hegemonies and empires. Classical authors demonstrate the importance of akropoleis to the religious and institutional history of both city-states and empires in Greece and beyond the Greek oikoumene.
