Eleians, Perioikoi, and Triphylians: New Pieces of Evidence
Resumé
The complex organisation of the political union of the Eleans before the synoikismos of 471 has been studied on various occasions. A system of allied communities, so-called perioikoi, had developed around a complex internal structure with federal elements. This makes it difficult to draw a clear distinction between internal and external borders. Recent finds and investigations allow new insights into these interdependencies. They will be presented in this paper. The starting point is the bronze tablet with regulations for Ledrinoi, which was found in the sanctuary of Eileithyia and Sosipolis in Olympia in 2011 and has already been published. In addition, the paper presents the very latest results of the Olympia Area Survey and a bronze inscription from the sanctuary of Poseidon at Samikon, which was found only September 2024.
