The structure of Ptolemaic administration in south-western Asia Minor: Caria, Caunos and Lycia
Resumé
This paper addresses the question of the structure of Ptolemaic administration in south-western Asia Minor in the third century BCE. On the basis of the later command structure of Rhodes over the same regions, it demonstrates that there were not two, but three Ptolemaic stratēgoi, one being in charge of Caria, one of Caunos, and one of Lycia. The existence of a specific command over Caunos was justified by the fact that this city was separated from the rest of Caria by a curtain of Rhodian and Seleucid territories.
