Abstract
In 1820, Ørsted discovered the relation between electricity and magnetism - but the dream to unite all the forces of nature under a single mathematical hat is still alive today. In this article, the reader is guided from Ørsted's insight to present day quark-gluon plasma and the search for a common theory of the four fundamental forces of nature. The authors take us to the heart of the experiments at CERN where the heaviest ions collide with almost the speed of light in order to recreate the conditions in the very beginning of the Universe. We learn how quantum chromo dynamics explains the strong nuclear force and how the behaviour of the particles in extremely hot and dense conditions reveals new sides of the deep structure of physics. The article also points to the discovery of the Higgs particle and the electroweak interactions - and to the continued attempts in physics to unite these with the gravitational force. This is both high energy and deep understanding: a forceful story about the continuation of Ørsted's project to find unity in the many aspects of physics. It is a fascinating journey into modern particle physics and questions that still have no answers.
