Abstract
Denne artikel tager fat på det klassiske Needham-spørgsmål: hvorfor opstod moderne naturvidenskab i Europa og ikke i Kina, trods Kinas teknologiske forspring? Gorelik bringer diskussionen ind i en moderne fysikkontekst og undersøger de dybere kulturelle og filosofiske forudsætninger for videnskabelig udvikling. Artiklen argumenterer for, at visse metafysiske antagelser – herunder idéen om universelle naturlove – har været afgørende for fysikkens fremvækst. Gennem en sammenligning af østlige og vestlige traditioner afdækkes subtile forskelle i verdensopfattelse, som kan have haft stor betydning. For fysikeren åbner artiklen et fascinerende perspektiv på, hvordan kulturelle paradigmer kan influere selve formuleringen af naturens love.
