Abstract
Toldbo introducerer læseren til de biologiske og teknologiske udfordringer ved at understøtte liv på Mars. Artiklen fokuserer på udviklingen af regenerative livsstøttesystemer, hvor biologiske processer anvendes til at producere ilt, føde og recirkulere ressourcer. Der gives konkrete eksempler fra iGEM-projekter og eksperimentelle koncepter, hvor mikroorganismer spiller en central rolle i fremtidige Mars-missioner. Artiklen diskuterer også de ekstreme miljøforhold på Mars og deres betydning for biologisk aktivitet. Samspillet mellem biologi og fysik bliver tydeligt, især i forhold til energibalance og masseflow. Artiklen er et spændende indblik i, hvordan tværfaglig forskning kan muliggøre menneskelig tilstedeværelse uden for Jorden.
