Abstract
The article discusses helio- and asteroseismology, i.e., studies of the properties of the sun and other stars based on observations of oscillations on the stellar surface. In the case of the sun one can make detailed inferences of the solar interior structure and rotation. For other stars the range of the observed oscillations is far smaller, but it is still possible to determine overall properties such as mass and radius. The article appeared while the authors were involved in establishing the SONG telescope, dedicated to observations of oscillations in stars of solar type, and roughly at the time of the launch of NASA's Kepler mission, which since then has completely revolutionized this field of research.
