Abstract
Her behandles et klassisk og stadig kontroversielt spørgsmål i statistisk fysik: Kan tyngdefeltet skabe temperaturgradienter i termodynamisk ligevægt? Med udgangspunkt i Josef Loschmidts idéer diskuteres relationen til Maxwell-Boltzmann-fordelingen og de principielle implikationer for termodynamikkens anden lov. Artiklen gennemgår både historiske argumenter og moderne eksperimentelle forsøg, herunder Graffs eksperimenter, som forsøger at detektere effekten. En særlig interessant pointe er koblingen til planeten Venus som mulig naturlig test af teorien. Niclasen formår at balancere mellem konceptuel klarhed og fysisk dybde, hvilket gør artiklen til en fornøjelse for læsere med interesse for fundamentale principper. Den afsluttes med et konkret forslag til et laboratorieeksperiment, som åbner for videre udforskning.
