Abstract
I anledning af 100-året for fortætningen af helium tager Finn Berg Rasmussen os med tilbage til 10. juli 1908 – dagen hvor Heike Kamerlingh Onnes åbnede døren til et nyt temperaturområde og dermed til helt ny fysik. Artiklen gennemgår de eksperimentelle landvindinger, der muliggjorde adgang til temperaturer omkring og under 4 K, og sætter dem i perspektiv i forhold til opdagelsen af superledning og senere superfluiditet. Vi får et indblik i Joule–Thomson-kølingens tekniske raffinement og de enorme praktiske udfordringer, der prægede pionertiden i Leiden. Samtidig trækkes linjer frem til nutidens anvendelser i bl.a. partikelacceleratorer og MR-scannere. For enhver fysiker er dette ikke blot videnskabshistorie, men en påmindelse om, hvordan grundforskning i ekstreme regimer former teknologiske kvantespring årtier senere.
