Focus and Scope

About the journal

The Journal of Organizational Knowledge Communication publishes peer-reviewed articles and essays which explore and challenge the ideas of specialized knowledge (e.g., organizational, domain specific, or disciplinary knowledge), the organizational contexts in or between which it arises, evolves, flows, is transformed as well as communicative events, settings and ideologies in which these processes are embedded – and relations between the three.

The Journal of Organizational Knowledge Communication is independent from the restraints any one disciplinary doxa and any one method; the only obligation adhered to is the wish to match the complexity of the object of study with modes of examinations befitting said complexity. In tune with this idea, authors are requested to examine and challenge their own stand in relation to the above dimensions / aspects / perspectives. The problems investigated may be theoretical, methodological and / or empirical in nature.

Aim & Scope

The Journal of Organizational Knowledge Communication is a meeting place for scholars interested in exploring and engaging discipline-dependent truisms and framings of

  • Knowledge,
  • Communication and
  • Organization

The journal’s credo is that these three theoretical fields in their interplay constitute the rudimentary, intellectual anatomy of late or postmodern society. It is the aim of the journal to establish a scholarly forum where these three fields as well as their relationships (or the lack of them) are challenged and re-interpreted.

The Journal of Organizational Knowledge Communication sees knowledge as the resource par excellence which permeates and drives social development. The journal investigates the ways in which knowledge – from politics to practice – evolves, is legitimized, sanctioned, codified, qualified, verified/falsified within or between organizations, disciplines, or domains and the forms in which it is represented.

The journal sees communication as constitutive and epistemic. As such the journal investigates the communicative, discursive, rhetorical construction of specialized knowledge, the practices involved as well as the positions and / or institutions participating in knowledge communicative events, settings or processes.

The journal sees organization as a social fact. As such the journal investigates motives behind organizing, organizational development, principles for organizing as well as the nature and qualities of the relations, connections and interdependencies between actors participating.

Last but not least the Journal of Organizational Knowledge Communication sees each of the three theoretical fields as both a field of study in its own right as well a catalyst for the other two fields.

Topics

Within this specific framework, the Journal of Organizational Knowledge Communication studies central knowledge communicative topics such as (but not limited to):

  • The influence of contextual variables (e.g., organizational, social, societal, disciplinary, historical, cultural, actor-related etc.) on knowledge communication
  • The discursive, communicative, rhetoric construction of specialized knowledge and of the positions or institutions participating in knowledge communicative events, settings or processes (e.g., expert and lay, authority and subject, decision maker and citizen etc.)
  • The ways in which knowledge is legitimized, sanctioned, codified, qualified, verified/falsified within or between organizations, disciplines, or domains and the forms in which it is represented
  • Asymmetries of knowledge (e.g., pertaining to professions, disciplines, inside and / or outside of the organization) and how these asymmetries may effect the communication of knowledge
  • Relations, connections and interdependencies between actors partaking in knowledge communication in various settings (e.g., between decision makers and experts, between experts and lay, between authority and subject etc.)
