About the Journal

Focus and purpose
Hyphae explores real-life questions and embodied experiences along with contemporary interdisciplinary research on the continuities between life and mind, body and cognition, behaviour and knowledge, theory and practice, contemplation and action. Mixing different formats, such as target-article forums and thematic panels, each issue opens up spaces for presenting, testing, and challenging new interdisciplinary perspectives on the continuities of mind and life around a set theme, a chosen topic, or a set of issues. Because hyperspecialized or polarized contexts tend to shrink this space of encounter, our aspiration is to cultivate participatory interdisciplinary practices that will unlock new knowledge, nurturing new research and methodological practices in line with the mission of Mind & Life Europe.

At Hyphae, we envision our publication as a meeting place for participatory academic research on the material and organic embedding of embodied experience. We maintain that this is a crucial intervention within an ethics of knowing focused on the promotion of moral responsibility in the acquisition, production and sharing of knowledge for combating epistemic injustice and supporting researchers in their capacity as knowers. We understand the ethics of knowing as inherently participatory and built upon communities of inquiry.

Hyphae: The Academic Journal of MLE – Mind and Life Europe

Target audience
Hyphae targets rigorous thinkers about questions of mind and life from various disciplines. We envision those who would be most inspired by Hyphae are philosophers, psychologists, scientists, anthropologists, historians, contemplative practitioners, clinicians– but, this list is not exhaustive!

History
Mind & Life Europe is an organization shaped by the living legacy of Francisco Varela and by the enactive understanding of the deep continuity of life and mind. In 2024, the MLE member Laura Candiotto started working to establish a new academic journal for Mind & Life Europe. She felt the need to offer a new participatory dialogical context to explore some of the key themes discussed within the MLE events. In collaboration with Amy Varela Cohen, Martijn van Beek, and Andreas Roepstorff, she created an editorial team whose members are actively involved in shaping the identity of the journal through their professional expertise, commitment to participatory research, and interest in interdisciplinary dialogue. Specifically, Bruno Clarke on Systems Theory and Ecology, Julien Tempone-Wiltshire on Counseling and Psychotherapy, Joshua Bergamin on Philosophy of Mind and Aesthetics, Josipa Mihic on Education and Social Sciences, Christian Suhr on Anthropology and Media Studies, Marieke van Vugt on Neuroscience, and Francesco Tormen on Religious Studies and Contemplative Studies.

One of the core aims of the Editorial Team is in fact to nourish an epistemic culture of collaboration and solidarity in academic research and in this way to offer an alternative to the isolation of researchers under the competitive pressure of a publish or perish culture.
