Agnete, the Merman, and Gade’s „Jugendträume“: A reply and some additional commentaries

Based on methodological, historical and biographical considerations, together with a comparative analysis including musical as well as „programmatic“ features, the present paper demonstrates that Gade’s Agnete og Havmanden sketches of September 1838, to which Anna Harwell has called attention in the 1993 issue of this yearbook, represent an embryo of the Jugendträume overture completed a few months later as the young composer’s final (and hardly succesful) attempt to express his newly discovered Agnete og Havmanden syndrome – nature vs. culture – in the form of an overture.
